Hiking on the path of runaway slaves in Le Morne Brabant definitely has to be among the best things to do during your stay in Mauritius. Located at the southwestern tip of Mauritius, this rocky peninsula has a peak that covers an area of more than 12 hectares (30 acres) and is about 556 meters above sea level.
Immerse yourself in the heart of nature while experiencing the opposite ends of the lush vegetation along with the rough and dry areas of the World Heritage site. As you walk through the mountain, listen to the murmurs of the trees, the song of tropical birds and contemplate the wild beauty with the breathtaking views of the turquoise blue ocean.
As you take altitude, you will observe a splendid flora and fauna with some endemic species that are specific to this region. If you are lucky, you can also see the Trochetia Boutonania, a rare floral species that is also Mauritius floral emblem.
As you ascend, you will witness the captivating features of the mountain, so there are many caves and ledges on the steep slopes. Generally surrounded by the lagoon, Le Morne Brabant is worth trying to the top if you want to contemplate the amazing and beautiful bird’s eye view.
The hike starts at 06:50am in Winter (from 1st April to 31st Oct) and 05:50am in Summer (from 1st Nov to 31st March). The meeting point is on the parking of the little commercial centre just next to Le Paradis Hotel.

Are the transport prices per vehicle or per person?
Transportation prices shown on our website are always per vehicle (not per person). The price you see is the price you pay to your driver after the tour is completed. No hidden fees. Your driver will be aware of the pre-arranged price.
If I need a tour within the next 12 hours, can I book it online?
Unfortunately, that will not be possible. Bookings should be made at least 24 hours in advance.
Will I have to share the vehicle with others who are not in my party?
We only do private tours. When you reserve a vehicle via our company, no matter whether it is a 3 passenger car, 8 passenger minivan or 20 passenger minibus, the vehicle is exclusively yours for the whole journey.
Where will the driver meet me?
Your driver will wait for you at your hotel reception on-time. If you are staying in an apartment of villa, please provide a contact number so that the driver can give you a call when he reach your accommodation.
What if do not find the driver?
In rare cases, customers may take some minutes to locate their driver. Our customers receive their driver’s contact details by email one day before the tour. Customers call liaise with the driver directly or simply our office or hotline so that our personnel can assist you & liaise with the driver.
Are the vehicles fully licensed and insured?
All supplied vehicles are fully licensed by the local authorities and carry an up to date Public service transport license. Be careful of bogus airport transfer advertisers as there are a number openly operating in Mauritius without licenses and liability insurance.
Bad weather conditions
Choose to re-schedule the tour for the another day or receive a full refund within 24 hours in case the local authorities issue a high wind/rainfall warning to hiking companies.
WHAT TO EXPECT IN THE LE MORNE HIKE
The half-day hiking route of Le Morne Brabant invites nature lovers and adventurers to enjoy an exciting hiking experience at the southern tip of the island. The walk can last between three and four hours, so it will be guided by professionals with EFR / WFA certification. You can also access the second part of the mountain, which can only be accessed through authorized guides.
The morning session (Monday to Saturday) begins at 0550 in summer and at 0650 in winter, throughout the year. The base of the hiking trail is generally flat and wide. Bulletin boards facilitate the location of roads, some of which are mostly shaded and not too physically demanding.
In the depths of the forest, you will meet the exquisite seabird, Paille en Queue and the native plant species that will captivate your attention. As you progress, you will find yourself in the dry and rough terrain of the mountain, which can be quite challenging. The heat will rise and, therefore, it is recommended to wear a hat or cap and water. It is also important that you are well equipped with sunscreen and good trekking shoes due to irregular tracks.
As you progress, you will find a gigantic basalt peak dotted with caves that once housed runaway slaves. You will have to climb a rocky hill with the equipment provided by the authorities, which can be a very challenging experience. As you progress gradually towards the top, you can easily see the huge metal cross that marks the highest accessible point. Take this opportunity to admire the breathtaking views of Ile aux Benitiers, Le Morne beach and the spectacular surrounding areas.

ABOUT LE MORNE MOUNTAIN:
The symbolic Le Morne Brabant is a majestic mountain located in the south western part of Mauritius, on the Le Morne peninsula. The majestic mountain has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since July 6, 2008 to commemorate the legacy of Maroonage (runaway slaves) in Mauritius. It is believed that slaves committed suicide by jumping from the mountain cliff due to the inhuman treatment they suffered.
Le Morne Brabant is one of the most preserved and wildest mountains on the island. It is a habitat for a wide variety of endemic and endemic species, such as the rare Trochetia Boutonania, which is the floral emblem of Mauritius.
